These days it seems like the whole world is conspiring to increase our waistlines. Walk into your local shopping centre and what happens? Your nose is assaulted with the most wonderful smell of foods. Pass by the cookie shop with heavenly chocolate scents wafting out. Stop off at one of the coffee chains and be tempted by the frothy concoctions full of sugar, full of calories. Into the high street and pass a well know bakery, the smell of hot sausage rolls tempts you to rush in and buy one or maybe two.
Back home you pick up the post and there is an ad for the local pizza parlour. A good price and some yummy toppings and an order goes in for a giant pizza, enough for a family but all too easily downed by one person. Supper time arrives so why not try out the new Chinese takeaway, after all they have been dropping tempting menus through your door for weeks.
How can we judge people who have a problem with their size when we live in a world where food is available at all hours, on every corner or at a click online. Where portion size has grown, where the supermarkets offer cheap foods filled with fat and sugar and where advertisers bombard us with images of delicious looking foods. Eating in-between meals is now commonplace and there is a vast array of snacks on offer. From a very young age children are cleverly drawn in to fast food outlets and once tasted these meals appear very hard to resist. Past generations did not have to struggle against temptation like this, the choice simply wasn’t there.
